Judy,

It's great to share with other educators. I'm currently a middle school librarian who is 30% technology in my school and a graduate student at Cardinal Stritch University pursuing a second masters in Instructional Technology. I spent 9 years in the Catholic system and know the joys and challenges of teaching with few resources. However, the devotion and spirit of Catholic educators cannot be beat. I'm actually considering applying for a position back in a Catholic school.

I suggest that you recommend Will Richardson's book _Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms_. He gives the educator a step-by-step introduction to using many of the Web 2.0 tools that are available.

This is a great post - just in time for me to add to a list of posts for teachers to read who are going to take part in a Web 2.0 workshop. Nothing better than hearing about these 'goodies' from practitioners. Our teacher librarians are also working hard to promote good use of Web 2.0 tools, but this time I will be working with primary school co-ordinators. Thanks for the nice write-up.

I could definitely see students using hand held computers in the future with them text messaging on them. I think that we need to focus on the now and not the distant future. I think until we start putting the hand held computers into classrooms we should continue to teach keyboarding and not get rid of the keyboard altogether. At least that's what I think!!!

I don't believe that common citizens were unable to participate in the educational system. They chose not to be involved.

I find myself troubled by the same things you are, but I place the blame on the people who let this happen. We can be a very passive society when it comes to watching what our government does and we often get what we allow. NCLB is the result of many years of perceived school failure and the inability of common citizens to participate in the educational system. We seem to scorn the very qualities that other countries find enviable. Check out this article:

Yes, teens do feel invincible. However, most teens want rules even if they say they don't. I have found it interesting that my students have not heard the rules of Netiquette until they get to middle school. I would agree with you that we need to start young. We teach our kindergarten children to play fair and nice on the playground. I think that we should also teach our kindergarten children to play fair and nice on the Internet as well. Thanks for your post.

I think that is one of the greatest challenges we face in our society-- people are not always accountable for their actions. It becomes even more apparent in an online world where anonymity is the name of the game. Teaching a teenager that, even though people can't see you, someone still could get hurt. Everybody remembers that feeling of invincibility as a teen. Now couple that with the fact they can say most anything online and have no fear of consequences. Etiquette and online safety must start early. If you are teaching these things after they have already been online--you're too late.
